National Era Cases, 1915-1963

The “closing” of the eastern and western frontiers through the establishment of stable state authority on the high seas and across the continental United States diminished the role of the federal death penalty. Into this void emerged a federal criminal justice asserting authority over newly created federal crimes – such as kidnapping, bank robbery, and trafficking – beginning in the early twentieth century.
